US/Canada Tour Wrap-Up (7/8-26/16)

Ryan Adams and the Shining picked up right where they left off from their last tour a year ago. The setlists were very similar to those previous shows but there were still plenty of new jam ideas, nightly improv songs, and the addition of "Halloweenhead" which marked the first time it's been played since 2008! Most of these gigs were festival shows but there were also a couple co-headlining gigs with Ryan's old touring mates - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Just about every gig was well received both by fans and critics!

Other than a string of gigs with the Shining, Ryan also played 2 shows and made a television appearance with his bluegrass buddies - The Infamous Stringdusters with Nicki Bluhm. This pairing had previously made an appearance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June. Together they put together new arrangements of rarely played tunes not typically played in the Shining setlist including "Tears of Gold", "Trains", and "Carolina Rain". They also brought the house down with covers of Slayer ("South of Heaven") and Black Sabbath ("The Wizard")!

With a new album almost finished, Ryan Adams debuted 5 new songs during the tour! Although it's usually hard for me to judge new songs based on live recordings, there are definitely some great ones in the bunch. "Outbound Train" which was played at 2 shows with the Shining  brings to mind the Replacements and the more rock/less country side of Whiskeytown. "Tightrope" was another highlight for me that was only performed solo acoustic but reminded me a lot of something Bruce Springsteen would write. The other three songs ("Haunted House", "Was I Wrong", and "To Be Without You") also sounded very promising.

Over the course of 14 shows, Ryan Adams along with the Shining and the Infamous Sringdusters played a total of 47 different songs! Besides all of the new tunes and old favorites, this tour may have featured the strongest set of cover songs played since the early 2000's! Besides Slayer and Black Sabbath, Ryan and the Shining managed to cover 2 Oasis classics ("Morning Glory" and "Supersonic") while opening for Noel Gallagher. Then on the final night (which was a solo acoustic gig in Washington DC), Ryan managed to folk-ify 2 Fugazi songs ("Waiting Room" and "Promises") as well as a very underrated Sun Kill Moon song called "Glenn Tipton".

Other Notables
- On 7/10 at Summerferst in Milwaukee, Ryan and the Shining performed "Red Hot Blues" for the first time live. This obscure b-side was released on the Willow Lane singe in 2015.

- On 7/19 in Charlottesville, rising country singer - Margo Price came out and sang with Ryan on "A Kiss Before I Go", "Oh My Sweet Carolina", and "Come Pick Me Up".

- On 7/24 in Port Chester, Amanda Shires sang with Ryan on a solo version of "Jacksonville Skyline". Ryan also debuted 3 new songs and played a rare version of "I Do Not Feel Like Being Good".

- On 7/25 Ryan Adams was joined by the Infamous Stringdusters and Nicki Bluhm for a performance of "Oh My Sweet Carolina" on The Stephen Colbert Show.
