New Zealand/Australia Tour Wrap-Up (5/20-5/27/17)

Ryan Adams and the Unknown Band stayed very busy on their week flying around Australia and New Zealand. The band played 6 shows in total that ran from 2-3 hours per night plus Ryan made quite a few radio and tv appearances throughout the week. In Brisbane, the band played a secret show to raise money for a local cat rescue.

Prior to leaving the US, Ryan mentioned via twitter that they had been rehearsing "Meadowlake Street", "Mockingbird", and reworked "Halloweenhead" to sound more like Fleetwood Mac. Only "Mockingbird" ended up being played but there were some other unexpected songs. On May 20th in Auckland, they played a beautiful cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" in tribute to Chris Cornell. Four days later in a small pub in Byron Bay, Australia - the band dusted off "Hard Way to Fall" for the first time since 2006, as well as "Friends"and "Desire". Other rarities included in the setlists were "The End", "A Kiss Before I Go", "We Disappear", and "Tightrope".

"Mockingbird" was played at just about every show on the tour while "Come Pick Me Up" was dropped almost entirely from the set. The group started to experiment more with segue-waying and jamming one song into another.  In the 6 shows played, the band performed a total of 40 different songs.

By the end, Ryan seemed happy to be flying home, as he posted the following message on twitter:

Thank you NZ/ AUS fans. These trips have destroyed my body, my balance and my health in my struggle with Meineres Disease. Thank you for the wonderful journey and memories. I'll never forget the brutal press, loyal loving fans, total madness and perfect nights at the Sydney Opera House. Be well my friends. I will love you and my music will love you always. Time to go home now. XO
