UK Tour Wrap-Up (9/14-9/25/14)

Ryan Adams and the Shining brought their interstellar space jams to Europe for a short but very busy trek. During the 11 days spent abroad, their schedule was full of radio and television appearances, interviews, not to mention 7 fairly lengthy concerts. Despite some vocal wear and tear towards the end of the leg, The Shining continued to improve and get more comfortable playing together.

The trip opened with an appearance on the Later with Jools Holland show on BBC Two. The following day, they performed a rare acoustic set on the Zane Lowe radio program. Then from there, it was two sold out shows at Shepherds Bush Empire in London; where the group was joined by Johnny Depp, who lent his wooly guitar chops to "Kim", "I Love You But I Don't Know What to Say", and the classic Danzig tune - "Mother"! Throughout all these gigs, Ryan gave some of the most insightful interviews of his career, and genuinely seemed thrilled to be playing shows again.

All of England seemed to be buzzing with excitement over Ryan's live comeback and great new album. Reading all the interviews, and listening to the shows, quickly brought back memories of the 2001 UK tour in support of Gold. It definitely feels as though Ryan Adams is in a whole other phase of his career now.

Overall the setlists remained similar to the July/August run of shows. There were still some surprises though. Another new song from the upcoming Blackhole record, called "The Door" went into steady rotation. While another Blackhole concert favorite "Catherine" was dropped from the set entirely. The band played a total of 34 different songs over the course of 7 shows. As before, the sets leaned heavily on material from the new album and the 1984 ep, along with a fairly even mix of songs from the rest of his catalogue. Still there remains no sign of anything from 29 or Demolition yet, but a couple songs from Gold finally got some airtime.

Other notable highlights from the tour:
In Amsterdam, after dealing with a sore threat, Ryan played a short and sweet 3 song solo acoustic set featuring "Trouble", "Rats in the Wall", and "Why Do They Leave".

Besides a guest appearance from Johnny Depp, the show on September 19th also featured the first and only appearances to date of "Let Go" (from Ryan Adams) and "Jacksonville" (from the 7" single of the same name).

The September 21st show at the Roundhouse was part of the iTunes Festival, and streamed through iTunes.
